Two of CFI's active researchers in health AI discuss their work and lessons derived from joining an international competition where they both received bronze medals.
For this CFI Talks session the CFI, in collaboration with the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) and Negros Oriental Rehabilitation Foundation, Inc. (NORFI), invited Dr. Bernd Moosmann, Professor of Physiological Chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University and a winner of the Oskar Fischer Prize, to lecture on a synthesis of various lines of evidence pointing to chronic excitatory insufficiency as the cause of Alzheimer's Disease.
Monitoring changes in fish density and biomass inside marine protected areas (MPAs) through fish visual census (FVC) can determine if MPAs are achieving their goal of promoting fish population recovery. Simplified FVC methods have been developed for citizen scientists to enable them to monitor fish populations in MPAs. However, MPA monitoring programs led by local stakeholders remain rare and difficult to sustain due to technical barriers related to FVC data management. Here, we describe and evaluate a novel online app called MPA-FishMApp, which we developed to help stakeholders of MPAs that protect coral reefs in the Philippines efficiently store, analyze, and visualize FVC data.

The CFI authors are visiting scientist Dr. Gerard Dumancas, postdoctoral research fellow and telehealth coordinator Dr. Pia Zamora, and director Dr. Romulo de Castro.
Excessive use of animal manure as fertilizers can lead to pollution through the introduction of nitrogen, phosphorus, and other mineral compounds to the environment. Wet chemical analytical methods are traditionally used to determine the precise chemical composition of manure to manage the application of animal waste to the soil. However, such methods require significant resources to carry out the processes. Affordable, rapid, and accurate methods of analyses of various chemical components present in animal manure, therefore, are valuable in managing soil and mitigating water pollution.

Intersections of Higher Education, Government, Healthcare, and Communities - CFI Talks Session 18/12/2022 The Center for Informatics is proud to present the first session of CFI Talks where we invite international and local experts to discuss their work and contributions to societal progress. For this session we have invited Dr. Christian Gloria, a renowned expert in public health from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center to tell us about his experiences in promoting and improving public health.

Trends in Genetics: Are phenome-wide association studies feasible in a developing country?7/11/2022 Our most recent publication "Are phenome-wide association studies feasible in a developing country?", was authored Dr. Gerald Dumancas, Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Scranton and Balik Scientist, with CFI researchers (Jonathan Adam Rico, and Drs. Pia Zamora and Romulo de Castro) and their collaborators from various institutions in Western Visayas.
Trends in Genetics has an impact factor of 11.639! The University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Society in America (UPMASA) and the UP College of Medicine (UPCM), presented the eleventh installment of the online research series titled "Expanding the Edge of Philippine Medicine" on June 28, 2022 (Tuesday), at 8:00 AM via Zoom. The session featured CFI director Dr. Romulo de Castro. He discussed the current efforts of the center in improving the reach of medical services in the Philippines with telehealth.
